解放前，以卖炸臭豆腐起家的谭衍生创办了老字号餐馆“打马楼”。谭衍生厨艺高超，在与秀梅的结婚喜宴上，他收了张汇泽、孙继良和古顺三个徒弟。最终，好学又有天分，有“菜疯子”之称的三徒弟古顺得到谭衍生的真传。 二徒弟孙继良早年就对秀梅产生爱恋，因爱生恨的他一心想取代谭衍生。他暗中与人勾结，使得谭衍生在赌场输掉了全部家当，并在儿子谭文华出生那天投河自尽。孙继良霸占了“打马楼”。面对突来变故，古顺随着“打马楼”金字招牌谜一样消失了。 大徙弟张汇泽和四萍一起从孙继良手中救出秀梅母子，他答应远走他乡的师母，要替师父保住“打马楼”，为了这个承诺，他一生都在为此努力着。 解放后，国家实行土改政策，孙继良难逃命运的捉弄，被打成资本家，“打马楼”也被公家没收变为国有资产。孙继良人财两空，他将仇恨转嫁到此时已是私有制改造委员会主任的张汇泽身上。 二十年后，同为下乡知青的张汇泽儿子张石风和孙继良的女儿孙晓慧相恋，并用两个草戒指私定终身。然而上一辈人的仇恨不允许他们有爱情的存在，私奔在外的他们借住在谭衍生遗子谭文华家中。张石风和孙晓慧被逼双双殉情，只留下一个还在襁褓中的孩子。慌乱中，张汇泽抱走了谭家的女儿，并让干儿子许世强代为抚养，而张、孙两家的骨肉被留在了谭家。师徒之间的血脉和情仇，悄悄地在这三个家庭延续……
